Last Minute Sympathy Gift Ideas
Last Minute Sympathy Gift Ideas » HomeIt's never easy to see someone you care about grieving. You want to comfort them but aren't sure how, and certainly don't want to do the wrong thing at a time like this. Sending a sympathy gift is always appropriate. But frequently, this type of thing happens last minute. Sympathy gift ideas can be tough to come up with suddenly so here are a few to get you started. - Flowers. Obviously flowers are the most traditional choice, especially as a last minute sympathy gift.
Why flowers? - Flowers represent every phase of life.
- Like life, flowers are beautiful, fragile, and require nuturing.
- Their beauty comforts those in sorrow and the fragrance is soothing as well.
- When it's hard to find the right words, flowers are a visual way to express sympathy and love.
- Easy to order, usually delivered quickly. I like Teleflora.
Why NOT flowers? Some feel that for the grieving, watching the flowers die is just another sad event at an already difficult time. Throwing them away can be depressing as well. For this reason, some prefer to send something other than flowers. Which brings me to my second most popular choice (for good reason)... - Food. Even if you can't imagine eating at a time like this, someone can.
The grief-stricken may not touch food right now but their guests will be hungry. Providing treats helps everyone. Lots of companies specialize in sympathy food, arranging and delivering it in an elegant way that doesn't scream "yea, goodies". Here are my favorite choices: - Cookies. Good food to eat while standing around, keeps well, travels well. Pick them up at your grocery store or order online from Mrs. Beasley's; they even have arrangements according to religion.

- Fruit basket. Bright, cheerful, healthy and requires no plates. Pick one up at your grocery store, or you want to send one look at Harry & David's. They're a recognized, classy company with lots of sympathy arrangements and quick shipping.

- Muffins. Nice choice for morning gatherings. If you bring them yourself (as opposed to sending them) consider cutting big muffins in half. To send them go to Mrs. Beasley's and order the 27 glazed mini muffins.

- Coffee. For an in-person morning visit, stop by Starbucks beforehand and ask for the Coffee Traveler. They will pour you a big box of coffee to go and also supply cups, sugar packets, stirring sticks and cream. Add a tray of their pastries if you like. Or have some ground coffee delivered to the house. Try Starbuck's again or my favorite, Peet's Coffee.
- A card. Perhaps the most difficult yet most important part of the sympathy gesture.
Any grocery store carries sympathy cards, or just use some of your own nice stationery. Need help finding the right words? See examples of what to say on a sympathy note.
