1. Ruby red wine.

   So easy, yet symbolic. Good for you too! Add some ruby red glasses if you can find them. I saw the ones on the right at Etsy.com. And they were made 40 years ago, aww!

   If they're gone by now, try Googling "ruby red wine glasses".

2. Rubies.

   There's nothing wrong with going with the obvious here. Ruby earrings, a ruby pendant, ruby cufflinks, ruby necklace or bracelet... they all work. Run down to Macy's or any department store and see what they've got in their jewelry case. It's an easier last minute gift than you'd think, and who doesn't love a new piece of jewelry.

   If you want to mix it up a little, find something unusual with rubies in it. Skull cufflinks anyone?

3. Ruby Picture Frame.

   I'm always seeing ruby-lined picture frames at places like Marshall's or TJ Maxx, aren't you? And they're beautiful but I never have a reason to get one. Well here it is! It's an even better gift if you can find a 40-year-old wedding picture to put in it. Good from wife to husband, husband to wife, kids to parents, anything.

4. 40th Anniversary Gift Basket

   Now this item is not related to rubies but it's one of the funner 40th anniversary gift ideas. Seniorstore.com (don't you love the name?) offers a gift basket of items that were popular 40 years ago. So for instance the basket might have candy, songs, and news items from 1969.

   It works for a 40th birthday but even better as a 40th anniversary gift because the recipients will actually know what the gifts in the basket are.

5. Nasturiums.

   Nasturiums are the traditional 40th wedding anniversary flower.

   Despite the nasty-sounding name, they're beautiful and even edible. If you plant them in your garden, they're easy to care for, snails reportedly do not like them, and they'll self-seed and come back the next season. If you can find a plant at your local gardening store, pick one up!

   Here's a little recipe you can add to it:

   Nasturtium Mayonnaise

   Makes 8 servings as a sauce for fish. Also great on sandwiches.

   • 1 cup mayonnaise
   • 1/4 tsp. finely minced garlic
   • 2 tsp. coarsely chopped capers
   • 1/3 tsp. grated lemon peel
   • 2 tsp. chopped nasturtium leaves

   Combine all ingredients. Keep chilled until ready to use.
